Day 123: Funky

This is a funky 3D wall art thing that I walked past.

It looks cool, to be sure, but it's a bit odd.

Day 122: Choo choo!

Went on a train, which was a remarkably pleasant experience. :-)

Day 121: Sign Fail

Someone wasn't paying enough attention when they attached the "Jet Wash" part of the sign.

Day 120: Really?!

The local pizza place near my new flat claims to be "Best American Pizza".

Somehow, I doubt it.

I'll report back when I've actually verified the truthiness of their name ;-)

Day 119: Not so authentic

I have also seen Miami Fried Chicken (and official KFC, of course).

I'm really glad I don't eat chicken, because I'm not sure that I'd want to see what these places had to offer (KFC is scary enough!).

Day 118: Left behind

There are signs, and loudspeaker announcements, telling people not to leave their paper (of which several versions are handed out for free willy-nilly) on the tube/train.

And yet...

Day 117: Pub food?

Went to a pub down the street from work, where they served super yummy Thai food.

Apparently it's a pretty common thing for pubs to serve Thai food as well as traditional English pub food. Somewhat of an odd juxtaposition, but I've become a big fan of Thai food here, so I'm not complaining.

Day 116: Sun!

I'm not buying this whole "London weather stinks" thing. ;-)

That said, a completely blue/cloud-free sky is a pretty rare event.

Day 115: Recovery...not so much.

So Ubuntu committed suicide today (auto-installed system updates and then refused to acknowledge that a graphics card was 1) in the computer 2) functional).

Managed to get into this recovery mode menu...but you can't actually move the selection or select anything.

Not quite as useful as it could be.

Day 114: Confused

It got the Monday the 22nd part right, but I'm not sure where it came up with Thursday the 18th.

It's also confused about the time zone difference between Britain, DC, and CA.

I think this add-on needs a bit of an upgrade.

Sunday, March 21, 2010

Day 113: Caffeine

This is possibly the largest coffee mug I've ever seen.

Sports Direct is, I think, some sort of online sports store. Not being into sports, I haven't investigated.

Day 112: Mail

I love the look of the mailboxes here. :)

Friday, March 19, 2010

Day 111: Only us

Only the Americans would have a giant eagle on the top of their embassy.

Sadly, the pictures I've seen of the new embassy don't look any less ugly (and I think the eagle's moving too).

Day 110: Boo!

Here is Boo, the kitty I met back in November.

He wanted to go out and play, but I made him stay inside a bit to love on him and then tried to get decent photos of him while outside (this was the best one, so that wasn't hugely successful).

He is very cute and sweet.

Day 109: Spring!

These flowers have suddenly appeared near the tube station at the end of my commute.

Yay for spring!

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Day 108: Underground

This is a practically empty rush hour tube train.

Notice the visible floor in between the people, and the fact that no one is falling out of the train as the doors close on top of them.

Monday, March 15, 2010

Day 107: Long shelf life

I'm still getting used to the dates, and thought this yogurt claimed to be good until August.

I was pretty relieved to discover that it wasn't genetically modified yogurt and was only good until April.

Sunday, March 14, 2010

Day 106: Seasoned traveler

After commuting on the tube for a month, I have grown to hate people like these.

The signs (that are everywhere) clearly say "stand on the right". And yet this couple feels so strongly about having a side-by-side face-to-face conversation (for the 30 seconds of the escalator ride) that they block the left walking path.

I'm starting to feel like I belong.

Saturday, March 13, 2010

Day 105: Albert

Across the street from the Royal Albert Hall is this giant golden statue of Prince Albert.

Must be handy to have royalty in love with you.

Friday, March 12, 2010

Day 104: Not really

It's hard/impossible to read, but above her name, this poster claims Danielle Steel is "the world's bestselling author".

For one, I hope that's not true.

And for two, that's still no reason to read her books, let alone buy them.

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Day 103: Traffic

Slightly blurry shot of traffic in the rain at the bus stop.

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Day 102: Jazz

I went out with a friend to dinner and they had bands playing jazz.

They were pretty good, especially considering my tolerance for jazz has gone way down in the last few years.

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Day 101: Rush Hour

This is rush hour on the tube. The guy standing up was shilling for money and claiming homelessness, though I wonder how profitable that is since he has to pay to ride the tube around. (I suppose if he goes street-side at the same station, though, it's free. I wouldn't want to ride the tube all night, though.)

Monday, March 8, 2010

Day 100: Cute

This is one of the set of flats near my great-aunt's house. They look completely adorable, though obviously I haven't seen the inside.

Sunday, March 7, 2010

Day 99: What the...?

Star Wars...the concert?

Okay then. I like Star Wars, but not that much.

Saturday, March 6, 2010

Day 98: English Breakfast

I met up with a friend at a cafe and had a vegetarian english breakfast.

I don't know that I want to see that much food again, ever. It was good, though.

Friday, March 5, 2010

Day 97: Faith

I saw this sign while on the bus, and thought it was very nice.

"Worthy of all acceptance" sounds so much better than "you're a heathen and going to be damned".

Thursday, March 4, 2010

Day 96: Daylight!

This was taken after work, so close to 6pm.

Even without Daylight Saving (sorry, "British Summer") Time kicking in, it's still quite light out.

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Day 95: Kleenex

The Kleenex here come in "mansize".

This would (and does) annoy me, but...

...they really mean it. One mansize Kleenex is equivalent to about 3 regular ones.

Makes me feel a bit better about using so many this week. :(

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Day 94: Sun

I'm really enjoying London weather - my only gripe is the wind, which seems to ignore any/all layers you may be wearing and freeze you regardless.

That being said, when the sun comes out, it's really noticeable (it doesn't seem to rain constantly here like the rumors, but it is overcast a lot, which I like because then I avoid sunburn and glare).

People always comment on how gorgeous it is outside if the sun is out. Nice change from NC where it's always "man, it's hot".

Day 93: Work!

So I accepted a job offer last week, and arrived bright & early at this building this morning for my first day of work. :)
